While her 1997 electronica-inspired release Ghostyhead doubtless threw many longtime fans for a loop, Rickie Lee Jones deserves kudos for making about as far a stylistic leap from her bohemian folk-pop origins as one can imagine. Her self-titled 1979 debut featured petulant but potent little-girl vocals and lyrics that delivered a sassy, streetwise take on L.A.'s smoke-hazed underbelly; a new breed of hard-drinking diva had arrived. In the 20 years since, her recorded work has ranged from polished studio pop to beautifully spare interpretations of jazz standards to her latest left-field sampling excursions. |

Jones's
shows at Noe Valley Ministry should welcome any still-bewildered followers
back to more familiar territory, though unusual circumstances promise
plenty of surprises: joined by local six-string hero Jim Campilongo
on guitar and punk icon Mike Watt on bass, the singer-songwriter will
dive headlong into her deep catalog of classics and covers without any
pre-gig rehearsal with her new compatriots. Judging from the ecstatic
reviews of a similar set of performances at Joe's Pub in Manhattan a
month ago, audiences should prepare to be mesmerized. 7 and 9 p.m.,
1021 Sanchez, S.F. $38. (415) 255-0333. (Dave Pehling)
