An absolute original live (by Michael Simmons)
When beatnik kitty cat Rickie Lee first blew minds in '79 with Chuck E.'s In Love, it was obvious that an artist of startling talent had arrived. As she evolved, straightened up, and became a mother, she wisely shed the theatrics and focused on her art. Taped last year in front of a crowd of adoring Swedes and beautifully directed by Ian McCrudden who bathes Jones in light and bright colors, this concert hasn't a frill in sight. The "little girl who's singing this song" still emotes with that singular conversational scat 'n' roll. She's a jazz singer really – always has been. She performs originals from her astounding one-two shot eponymous debut and its follow-up Pirates, all the way through '09's Balm In Gilead. A fine guitarist and pianist, she's simply backed by bassist and drummer, both of whom sing, creating gorgeous three-part harmonies. At one point she becomes so wrapped up in her guys' delightful falsettos, she forgets the lyrics and lapses into giggles. Rickie Lee Jones clearly loves her job.

  • “An American original, Rickie Lee Jones has that rare ability to transfix the listener with her intensely personal songs while fearlessly blazing a trail through the worlds of folk, rock and pop. Her latest studio effort, Balm in Gilead is one of her most accessible recordings in years, yet it still showcases her innate sense of musical adventure...Genius.” – Detroit Free Press

  • “Thirty years since her astonishing Chuck E’s in Love debut, Rickie Lee remains a singular talent who gets a chance to fully flourish here with songs of innocence and experience. She wrote most of them over the past 20 years – sometimes good things take time to mature.” – Daily Mirror (UK)

  • “Jones wanders stylistically from the wistful country music of "Remember Me?" and Paul Simon-esque poignancy of "Bonfires", to the Laura Nyro-style blue-eyed soul of "Old Enough", a duet with Ben Harper. She hasn't lost her gift for the telling line, as when reassuring her daughter in "Wild Girl" that "the thing that makes you beautiful doesn't come out of a jar"; but surprisingly, the standout track, "The Moon is Made of Gold", turns out to have been written long ago by her father. A jazzy soon-to-be standard similar in mood and tone to "Midnight at the Oasis", it features whistling and mouth-trumpet in the manner of Leon Redbone, and a deliciously sweet guitar solo by Bill Frisell.” – The Independent (UK)

  • "One song after another gives you goose bumps... the duet between Ben Harper and Rickie Lee Jones lives up to what it promised...! Frisell creates just the right atmosphere... definitely a prime candidate for this year's top ten list!" (Axel Stinshoff /Jazz thing)

"Melancholic reflections by a wonderful singer/songwriter." (Rolling Stone 11/2009 - 3,5 out of 5 stars)

"... beautiful and sparsely arranged songs whose lyrical depth and harmonic connections to folk, bluegrass, soul, blues, and jazz emphasize once more Rickie Lee Jones's striking orginality within the singer-songwriter genre." (Schnuess Bonn 11/2009)

"Balladesque, adventuresome jazz with an affinity towards gospel music, Irish tunes, Django Reinhardt, and more." (Melodie & Rhythmus)

"A very contemplative album with reflections on childhood, youth and getting older, parting, redemption, and the moments of perfect happiness in between times. The songs (some of which she started writing decades before) form quite a wild mix of styles - besides showing her commitment to introspective acoustic guitar music ("Bonfires"), she blends gospel and Motown soul ("old Enough"), jazz and Western swing ("The Moon Is
Made Of Gold"), or folk, country, and Tex-Mex music ("Remember Me"), which perhaps is the most thrilling combination here.To make this mixture work she invited fellow music geniuses like Bill Frisell, Alison Krauss, and the absolutely splendid Jon Brion." (Stereo 12/2009)

"The perfect sound to conclude the evening... well done, Miss Jones!"
(Xaver 11/09 - Album of the Month)

"These ten songs show a mature artist who not at all has lost touch with normal life and who is convincing especially because of she is faithful to her own body of work while, at the same time, she never seems to be retrogressive." (Westzeit, 11/2009)
